Sleep Curriculum Capstone Seminar

The capstone seminar is a two hour theoretical and clinical application of the sleep curriculum content under the guidance of recognized behavioral sleep medicine subject matter experts.

The seminar will begin with group case presentations of selected de-identified patient cases, consisting of a detailed conceptualization to include homeostatic and circadian factors, predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors, maladaptive behaviors and cognitions, hyperarousal, contributing medical and mental health co-morbidities, and any other factors.  After presentation, the trainees and invited subject matter experts will engage in interactive review and feedback, synthesis of lessons learned, and application to trainees’ clinical settings. The intent of this portion of the seminar is to exemplify the thought process underlying the treatment of patients with sleep disorders from referral to conclusion, as well as to provide an opportunity to practice the provision of intermediate level supervision in a peer setting.  Trainees will receive feedback not only on cases, but on consultation approach.

The second portion of the seminar will consist of a moderated panel discussion by the invited subject matter experts of current behavioral sleep medicine topics and the future direction of the field.  The intent of this portion of the training is to facilitate trainees’ individual plans for next steps after the conclusion of the sleep curriculum, both in terms of professional development vis a vis sleep-related knowledge but also in implementation in their respective clinical practice.

Approximately four weeks prior to the seminar, consultants will introduce the expectations for the seminar.  Trainees will be divided into groups and select a real-world patient case that represents a case typical of the complexity of patients seen with sleep complaints (versus a “perfect” or “textbook” treatment example).  Groups will coordinate via email to select the case and develop a brief 10-15 minute presentation to be given during the capstone seminar. Presentations will be delivered on a template to be provided to trainees in advance.
