Addressing Discrimination in the Context of Trauma Focused Evidence Based Psychotherapies Pre-Meeting Institute (May 7th, 1pm - 4:00pm ET)


In recent years, the impact of stress due to racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other forms of identity-related discrimination has received greater attention. This presentation will discuss how to broach the topic of discrimination with clients, provide practical strategies for assessment, and tailoring cognitive and behavioral interventions with cultural sensitivity. Clinicians may benefit from guidance related to how to address discrimination in the context of trauma-focused, evidence-based PTSD treatments such as Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure therapy. A historical context of relevant cultural factors will be presented. In addition, research related to health disparities in PTSD symptom presentation will be summarized. Attendees will learn about important cultural factors to consider in assessment and treatment. Attendees will take part in experiential activities to practice these clinical skills.
