Although military families are extremely resilient, unique issues such as deployment, relocation, and injury can challenge the family system. This workshop will provide an overview of military stressors that can impact a family system as well as the common reactions that children and adolescents may display. Coming from a strength-based perspective, participants will explore how to build treatment plans around key coping skills and provide therapeutic interventions that are tailored to this unique population.
Target Audience: For behavioral health/healthcare providers who treat military personnel, veterans, and their families.
Instructional Level: Introductory
Attendees will be able to:
1) Evaluate the impact of military stressors on children
2) Differentiate common behavioral and emotional reactions in children to inform clinical treatment interventions
3) Integrate interventions to improve treatment outcomes with children

Kathleen Levingston is the Faculty Support and Development Coordinator for the School of Counseling at Walden University. She obtained her doctorate in Counselor Education in 2004 from the University of New Orleans. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor and a Board Certified TeleMental Health Provider. Kathleen has worked in the mental health field for over 19 years specializing in counseling children, adolescents, and their families. She works part time at the Well Clinic in Prairieville, LA and is a founding member of a play therapy study abroad program in Italy for the past 10 years.
