Description

The aims of this program are to review chronic pain education and common treatment pathways. More specifically, evidence-based approaches to understanding and treating chronic pain will be provided. Talking tips for use with patients regarding education and recommended treatment approaches will be covered throughout the presentation. A case, which will exemplify the learning objectives, will be included in the presentation. 

 

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the biopsychosocial and evidence-based approach to chronic pain
  2. Employ communication tools to improve work with patients 
  3. Determine how to incorporate evidence-based approaches into practice

Dr. Jennifer Murphy has spent her career specializing in the behavioral treatment of individuals with chronic pain and is a nationally recognized expert in this area. She is the lead trainer and author the VA’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) protocol and therapist manual and has trained over 500 providers across the VA system. In addition, Dr. Murphy is co-investigator on multiple funded research trials investigating CBT for chronic pain applications and outcomes.

Nicolle Angeli, is the Clinical Director of the nationally-recognized inpatient chronic pain rehabilitation program at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida, which is the VHA’s only CARF-accredited, inpatient chronic pain rehabilitation program. Within the CPRP, Veterans learn to treat their pain and improve their quality of life with active, self-management skills. In addition to this clinical work, she is a trainer and consultant for the national VA roll-out on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for chronic pain.
