Description

The aims of the program are to discuss how anger and aggression can be a part of the clinical presentation of PTSD in those who have served in the military. The rates of anger and aggression in Veterans/ Service Members will be described and as well as how emotion regulation ability is related to aggression in those with PTSD.   Practical strategies for assessing anger and aggression in those with PTSD will be provided. Finally,  current psychotherapies that are available to help Veterans/ Service Members to decrease their anger and aggression will be reviewed to include the results of a study that tested a novel three session treatment aimed at reducing aggression. 


Learning Objectives (one measurable objective per credit hour)

1.    Describe the rates of anger and aggression in Veterans / Service Members and civilians with PTSD.
2.    Explain how emotion regulation ability is related to aggression in those with PTSD.
3.    Examine pilot data for a treatment (Manage Emotions to Reduce Aggression) that taught Veterans how to regulate emotions in order to reduce aggression.

Dr. Miles is a reserach clinical psychologist at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital and Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences, Morsani College of Medicine. Her research explores ways to assist Veterans with recovery from  PTSD and challenging comorbidities such as emotion dysregulation, aggression, and traumatic brain injury. She is primary investigator (PI) on a VA Clinical Science Research & Development grant titled  “Consortium to Alleviate PTSD - Using Emotion Regulation to Decrease Aggression in Veterans with PTSD”, Co-PI on a VA Health Service Research & Development grant title, “Health Outcomes Associated with TBI Screening,” and site co-investigator on a Corporative Studies Program great, “Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium.”
