In this 90-minute webinar, participants will obtain a better understanding of working with LGBT Service members and Veterans. We will provide data related to rates of LGBT persons in the civilian, military and veteran communities. In addition, we will provide an overview of the history of LGBT individuals in the US and within the military. The presentation will discuss some of the negative consequences of the stigma associated with LGBT populations and the impact of military culture and policy on stigma. Participants will leave with knowledge about the theoretical background, guidelines and recommendations for LGBT affirmative interventions. Finally, we will conclude with providing some of the resources available within the military and the community for LGBT persons.

Sharon Birman, Psy.D., is a CBT trainer working with the Military Training Programs at the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. She joined the CDP in 2014 after completing her postdoctoral fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she was actively involved in CBT and DBT intervention, supervision and education. She completed her predoctoral internship at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Center, focusing her training suicide prevention and evidence-based interventions for the treatment of individuals with severe, chronic mental illness.
Dr. Birman received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Southern California and her master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University.
Her professional interests are in the areas of intervention and treatment planning for severe and chronic mental illness, suicide prevention, social justice, multicultural and diversity issues in therapy. She has received intensive training in CBT and DBT in a variety of contexts, including hospital setting, community mental health centers, Veterans Affairs and within an applied research lab. She has also received training in Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP), among other therapeutic modalities. She is certified in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST), and Brief Response to Crisis (BRC).

Erin Frick, Psy.D., is an Evidence-Based Psychotherapy (EBP) Champion-Consultant with the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Located at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, Dr. Frick serves as an advocate for evidence-based mental health treatment utilization, provides consultation services, informs clinic process improvements, and develops toolkits designed to expand access to and availability of evidence-based psychotherapies.
Dr. Frick received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Manchester College in Indiana. She earned her master’s degree in mental health counseling from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and her doctorate in clinical psychology from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
Prior to coming to CDP, she was a contract psychologist treating active duty military members at Travis Air Force Base using EBPs including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure (including the use of Virtual Reality Therapy), and Cognitive Behavioral Couples Therapy for PTSD. Prior to working with the military, she worked primarily in university counseling centers and community mental health.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Frick’s clinical work has focused on developing group therapy services in mental health clinics, training and supervising staff in the use of group therapy, mindfulness-based treatment, and the assessment and treatment of trauma-related mental health conditions.
