Description

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centered style of communicating that is designed to facilitate engagement in helping relationships and strengthen a person’s own motivation for behavior change, skills that can be integrated with a variety of other evidence-based approaches to care (Miller & Rollnick, 2013). This session will involve deeper discussion of the MI concepts and skills introduced in last year’s webinar by the same presenter. Specifically, this webinar will emphasize embodying the essential spirit and core skills of MI when addressing ambivalence about evidence-based psychotherapy engagement and behavior change with clients; approaches to moving between MI and other EBPs; and deconstructing the concept of resistance in the service of supporting both behavior change and the therapeutic relationship throughout EBPs. Participants will be invited to consider how they may integrate MI within the context of their EBP practice and examine various sample client scenarios throughout the presentation.

Target Audience: For behavioral health providers who treat military personnel, veterans, and their families.
