Description

This training provides military and civilian mental health providers with information about key elements of the assessment process when treating military and veteran couples. The components of an initial assessment will be reviewed with a specific focus on how aspects of military culture impact their relationships. In addition, a variety of assessment tools will be presented including self report measures and genograms.

 

Participants will be able to:

  1. Specify two assessment tool that can be used with military-connected couples
  2. Determine the components of a comprehensive clinical interview with military-connected couples

Former Senior Military Behavioral Health Clinical Counselor

Laura J. Copland, MA, LCMHC, formerly a Senior Military Behavioral Health Clinical Counselor at the Center for Deployment Psychology (active at the time of course development), received her Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Antioch University New England in 1989.

Prior to joining the CDP staff, Ms. Copland directed, designed, and implemented state programs to assist active duty Service Members, Veterans and their families during and post-deployments, including Maryland National Guard Outreach and Maryland’s Commitment to Veterans. She has trained both military and civilian professionals on working effectively with military behavioral health issues. Ms. Copland has more than 20 years of direct service experience working with military Veterans and other survivors of trauma and acute and post-traumatic stress issues. Additionally, Ms. Copland was a Senior Adjunct Professor for 5 years in the Antioch University graduate psychology department.

Ms. Copland was awarded the State of Maryland Meritorious Civilian Service Medal by the Maryland Army National Guard for her work in the design and implementation of the Reintegration/Yellow Ribbon Program for all returning Maryland veterans and their families.

Kaleigh Flanagan, Psy.D., is a Military Internship Behavioral Health Psychologist with the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda Maryland. Located at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) in Honolulu, HI, she serves as an instructor, faculty member, and supervisor for TAMC’s APA-Accredited Clinical Psychology Internship Program. Additionally, she delivers evidence-based treatment to active duty service members and their families. At the CDP, she is responsible for helping develop and distribute trainings and education materials to a range of medical and mental health care providers and students. Prior to joining the CDP, Dr. Flanagan provided psychological assessment, crisis intervention, and psychotherapy services to Veterans through the VA Health Care System. She also delivered tele-mental health services to Veterans throughout the Pacific Islands and developed programs for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Veterans. 

Dr. Flanagan earned her master's and doctorate degree from William James College in Massachusetts. She completed an APA-accredited clinical psychology internship at the Coatesville VA Medical Center in Pennsylvania and pursued post-doctoral training in LGBT Veterans Health at the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System, Honolulu. She also received specialized training in video telehealth, mental health triage, and PTSD. Her professional interests include the treatment of serious mental illness, trauma-related mental health issues, multicultural psychology, LGBT health, and resilience.
