Description

This presentation in Pain Management will focus on two options that might be seen as the ends of a spectrum; one non-pharmacological (manipulation and mobilization) and one pharmacological (opioid care). The first presentation will focus on the work the RAND Corporation has done on researching the use and appropriateness of manipulation/mobilization for low back pain and cervical pain including work in the VA and the military. The second will discuss an opioid safety Program in The National Capital Region enhanced Multi-Service Market.

Christopher Spevak, MD, MPH, JD Related Seminars and Products


Christopher Spevak, MD, MPH, JD, is the Director of the National Capital Region’s Opioid Safety Program and the Deputy Director of the National Capital Region Pain Initiative and Wounded Warrior Pain Care Initiative. Leading a team of specialty experts, he establishes policies for safe opioid prescribing, prevention of opioid abuse and diversion, treatment of substance use disorder, drug testing protocols, and other related programs for Military Health System beneficiaries.  Dr. Spevak is a Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC where he lectures on the intersection of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. He received his Medical degree from the Northeast Ohio Medical University and trained at the Cleveland Clinic and University of Pittsburgh Hospitals.  He received a Master of Public Health degree in Health Management and Policy from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and Law degree from Catholic University of America.  He is a member of numerous medical and legal associations and has served as the 143rd President of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia.  He has been interviewed on CNN, NPR, Wall Street Journal, National Geographic and the New York Times for his work with opioids in the Military Health System.

Ian Coulter Related Seminars and Products


Ian Coulter is a senior health policy analyst at the RAND Corporation, where he holds the Samueli Institute Chair in Policy for Integrative Medicine. He is a full professor in the School of Dentistry, UCLA, in the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry; a professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School; and a research professor at the Southern California University of Health Sciences. Coulter has published over 150 articles, chapters and books. He is past Vice President for Integrative Medicine at the Samueli Institute. His recent grants include NIH grants for an Evidenced-Based Practices program in CAM; evaluation of hospital-based integrative medicine; the context effects on the health encounter; and Center of Excellence grant to study Appropriateness of Care in CAM. He also holds grants from the DoD to conduct comparative effectiveness trials of chiropractic in military facilities; and completed an evaluation of the creation, implementation, and evaluation of health policies in Health Affairs for the DoD and recently published a study of an Integrative Pain Clinic in a military health facility.

Coulter was born in New Zealand and holds degrees in sociology from the University of Canterbury (B.A., M.A. Honors) and the London School of Economics & Political Science (Ph.D.) and an honorary doctorate in humanities from the Southern California University of Health Sciences. He was a Pew Fellow at the RAND/ University of California at Los Angeles, Center for Health Policy Study from which he received a certificate in health policy analysis. Additional qualifications include a diploma in educational management from the Institute of Educational Management, Harvard University. He is past President of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.
